The rating places Roger’s in the top 10 percent of IGA’s 1,600 supermarkets throughout the country. IGA hired a company to conduct an assessment of all its supermarkets, including store appearance, products, employee uniforms and use of technology. For a store to get five stars, it must meet or exceed 92 percent of the qualifications.

"We’re extremely proud that our supermarket and employees earned the five-star rating," Roger Perno, owner of Roger’s Marketplace, said in a statement. "We focus all our efforts on making Roger’s Marketplace one of the finest supermarkets in the area and ensuring that our customers have a pleasant shopping experience."

All IGA stores are independently owned and operated. The five-star rating, according to the company, helps ensure that all supermarkets are consistent in terms of the way they operate and their cleanliness. Inspectors came on Feb. 28 to conduct their evaluation of Roger’s. They spent four to five hours at the market and checked displays, maintenance, refrigeration, sanitary procedures and other areas.

There are more than 4,200 IGA supermarkets worldwide, along with 37 distribution companies and 55 manufacturers, vendors and suppliers. IGA currently has stores in 48 states and 43 countries.

"Earning a five-star rating is no small achievement," Dr. Thomas Haggai, chairman and chief executive officer of IGA, said in a statement. "Virtually every aspect of the supermarket is reviewed, right down to the appearance of the parking lot. This is a great accomplishment for Roger Perno and the members of his staff."

"We always want to do better, but this was certainly a great report," Perno said.
